Ménière’s disease is not a result of calcium crystals or stones becoming disrupted in the inner ear. Ménière’s is a chronic viral infection of EBV—essentially a version of vertigo, which is inflammation of the vagus nerves. When the vagus nerves are inflamed by EBV’s neurotoxins, they swell. That swelling creates pressure, oftentimes in the neck and ears. This can cause chronic or recurring balance issues, where you feel as if you’re on a boat. It could be subtle or pronounced.
When the brain stem is inflamed, the informational signal changes as the signal is exiting the brain stem into the vagus nerves, prompting the vagus nerves to spasm. Vagus nerve inflammation can also cause a range of experiences of dizziness, from a slight dizzy sensation to a feeling that the room is spinning and you can’t move an inch without vomiting. EBV can also directly enter the brain stem, where the vagus nerves are exiting, and cause inflammation this way.
It’s also common for those with Ménière’s to experience a version of tinnitus, whether mild or severe. This is because viral neurotoxins tend to affect the labyrinth of the inner ear, creating a ringing, buzzing, or humming.
If someone experiences an internal popping sensation in the head, that’s from neurotoxins inflaming the vagus nerves, putting pressure up against the inner ear, plus neurotoxins directly swelling the labyrinth of the inner ear. EBV can also enter the nerves of the inner ear, causing tinnitus.
When EBV enters the labyrinth of the inner ear, it can create fluid production. Fluid production does not cause chronic vertigo and dizziness. Rather, fluid production causes pressure, which can create a whooshing or popping sound. Sometimes, if the fluid production is severe in both ears, a person can get a sensation like their head is floating. If someone with fluid production gets dizzy, the dizziness is from vagus nerves that are inflamed at the same time, not from EBV’s fluid production. Someone else could have fluid production and no dizziness because vagus nerves are not inflamed.
